Q: I have a 14-year-old outboard deck boat that I know has never had any service on the steering system. Can you tell me what's required and how I can do it?

A: Unless the cable has been seized by corrosion, the job should be easy, and you're smart to give it a whirl. First, remove the cable connection to your outboard or stern-drive unit. Next, unscrew the locking nut over the cable and slide the cable out. Clean it, then lube it. Teleflex Marine recommends using marine lithium grease. We'd suggest lubing the end before you slide the cable back in the sheath and lube it all, as it's inserted, to make the job less messy.
