Q: I have a 2000 Yamaha 90-horse outboard two-cycle. How bad is ethanol going to be on this motor, what's the best way to safely use ethanol? Do I have to change my fuel tank to an aluminum tank?

A: You won't have to change fuel tanks. Fiberglass tanks in older yachts are dissolving from ethanol, but not the roto-molded tank you have. Steel tanks, on the other hand, might be more prone to rust due to the moisture caused by ethanol. Your motor should stand up well, if you take three precautions:
1. Install a fuel/water separator. Yamaha's is perfect for most boats and costs about $100. If you're marginally handy, you can do it in 30 minutes or less with a drill and screwdriver.
2. Always put fuel stabilizer in your fuel to prevent fuel degradation.
3. Keep your tank full to avoid condensation building up.
